Research Support

Project “Advanced Radiation Therapy Development” Varian, Corp for the period 5/13/08-5/12/11. Role on project: Principal Investigator. There are three novel projects included in this agreement, including: IMRT quality assurance, exploring tumor control vs. dose distribution characteristics, and exploring potential clinical tests of radiation repair pathway effectiveness. The project focuses on gathering animal data related to the effect of uniform vs. non-uniform dose distributions. The rationale is to better support and define potential advantages of boosting dose distributions which are typically made uniform in current clinical practice.
Project “Normal Tissue Complication Modeling for Radiotherapy”, 07/01/99-11/30/09, Role on project: Principal Investigator. The broad goal is to improve mathematical models of radiotherapy outcomes based on dose distributions and image characteristics. Specific projects include: improving tools to gather and analyze data; working to gather better clinical and laboratory data for modeling; improving algorithms to build statistical models; and improve methods to more effectively use the models in radiotherapy treatment planning.
Project “Advanced Technology QA Center” 07/01/07 – 06/30/12, The goals of this grant are (1) to develop quality assurance programs in three-dimensional conformal therapy that will be uniform to all Cooperative Groups who choose to participate in this program; (2) develop equivalent programs in brachytherapy to multiple body part sites to ensure uniformity and quality assurance and establish standards in normal tissue3 tolerance; (3) establish uniform guidelines in database interpretation that allow for all dose-volume histogram analysis for tumor volume and normal tissue to be housed in one database; (4) to provide appropriate storage and interpretation f diagnostic x-rays required for protocol analysis and (5) develop QA programs for further advanced technology treatment programs such as Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy.
Project “Normal Tissue Complication Modeling for Radiotherapy”, Administrative Supplement; 08/1/09-12/31/10, Role on project: Principal Investigator. The investigator proposes to use this administrative supplement to accelerate the pace of process towards each one of these specific aims. For each endpoint, we propose to test and validate our best current model via a newly assembled dataset. Treatment plans will be selected from our extensive treatment planning dataset on a matched-pairs basis, matching high-risk and low-risk patients according to predicted toxicity levels. Outcomes will be assembled in two different ways: (1) from an in-house database with prospectively collected outcomes for head and neck patients (xerostomia), and (2) from electronic patient records for lung (acute esophagitis and pneumonitis).
Project “Pre-Clinical Research Projects and Clinical Studies based on Tomo Therapy” 7/1/99 – 11/30/09. Work by Dr. Deasy’s group focuses on outcomes driven treatment planning, in particular models and tools to estimate outcomes and algorithms to drive treatment planning based on outcomes.
Project “Management of Breathing Effects in Radiotherapy Planning”, 7/01/07-6/30/12. The goals of this grant are to develop a shared cross-platform toolset and techniques and test datasets that will eventually be publicly archived for use by other researchers.
Project “FLT-PET as a Biomarker of Radiotherapy Response in Lung Cancer” 7/1/08 – 6/30/10. The investigators propose a feasibility study to prospectively monitor the uptake of FLT in a cohort of 25 non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients who receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment. By analyzing FLT-PET/CT patient data at pre-treatment and mid-treatment, they hypothesize that they will be able to predict disease persistence and tumor local probability more accurately.
Project “Predicting Radiotherapy Outcomes by Combining Physical and Biological Factors” 5/15/08 – 4/30/12. The goal is to test the combination of biological/biomarker data and dose data to improve the ability to predict radiotherapy complications. In particular, we will use blood-based biomarkers as well as treatment dose distribution characteristics to potentially improve the ability to predict (or avoid radiation pneumonitis).
