The Department of Radiation Oncology would like to congratulate the 2017 graduates of the clinical and medical physics residency programs!

The clinical residency class of 2017, Ashley Weiner, MD, PhD, Sahaja Acharya, MD, and Sana Rehman, MD, marked the first ever all-female class of clinical residents to graduate from the Department of Radiation Oncology at Washington University. Data reports from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for the 2015-2016 academic year show that only 28.5% of the 733 residents currently pursuing clinical radiation oncology are female1. “As the Residency Program Director, it has been extremely rewarding to watch this year’s three graduates hone their clinical and research skills over the past four years and develop into skilled, talented and confident Radiation Oncologists,” says Stephanie Perkins, MD (clinical residency program director). “These accomplished women are excellent role models for future generations.”

This year’s medical physics graduates, Jochen Cammin, PhD, and Francisco Reynoso, PhD, will both be staying on at Washington University as instructors in the Department of Radiation Oncology’s medical physics division. “We are proud to be retaining our graduates this year,” Olga Green, PhD, associate program director for medical physics says. “Jochen and Francisco became invaluable members of our department by virtue of strong clinical and academic work, and we look forward to working with them as colleagues.”

A graduation celebration was held on June 9, 2017, and included an award presentation for three annual residency program awards. Sahaja Acharya, MD, received the Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award from the RSNA Research & Education Foundation, presented in recognition of outstanding radiological research. Jiayi Huang, MD, received the Teacher of the Year Award from the clinical residents, and Lakshmi Santanam, PhD, received the Mentor of the Year Award from the medical physics residents.
