Dr. Michalski is a member of the ASTRO Board of Directors, currently serving as the Secretary/Treasurer. His research interests include radiation dose escalation in the management of prostate cancer; conformal therapy to reduce toxicity in late neuro-cognitive effects in children with medulloblastoma; and assessment of quality of life in survivors of adult and childhood malignancies.

Research Interests

Dr. Michalski’s research focus is on urologic cancers, pediatric cancers, and quality assurance in clinical trials research. His research interests include radiation dose escalation in the management of prostate cancer, conformal therapy to reduce toxicity in late neuro-cognitive effects in children with medulloblastoma, and assessment of quality of life in survivors of adult and childhood malignancies. He is the Principal Investigator of the Imaging and Radiation Oncology Core (IROC – St. Louis) and oversees collaborations with cooperative groups and quality assurance centers. Dr. Michalski is the Co-PI of the Veteran’s Administration Quality Assurance contract to oversee QA/peer review of all VA radiation oncology. He is the Chairman of the Image Guided Radiation Therapy Committee. This committee fosters the development and management of clinical trials using new and innovative technologies in the field of radiation oncology. He works closely with the site committee chairs to identify investigators and specific research projects that employ 3D conformal radiation therapy or intensity modulated radiation therapy. He also collaborates with co-chairs in Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiotherapy, Medical Physics and the Image-Guided Therapy QA Center to establish quality guidelines regarding the implementation of these technologies within studies conducted by the RTOG. Dr. Michalski is also the principal investigator on both Phase I and Phase II clinical trials investigating radiation dose escalation in glioma and prostate cancer.
