Biography

Maria Thomas, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor of radiation oncology. She earned her medical degree and PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 2008. Dr. Thomas joined the faculty at the School of Medicine in 2013 after completing her residency in radiation oncology at Washington University, where she served as Chief Resident. She is Director of Medical Student Clerkship in Radiation Oncology. Her clinical practice specializes in the treatment of patients with breast cancer and lymphoma. Dr. Thomas’ technical expertise includes all modalities of radiation therapy including 3-D conformal treatment planning, IMRT, stereotactic body radiotherapy, image guided radiation therapy, MRI-guided radiation therapy, accelerated partial breast irradiation, brachytherapy, protons, advanced localization systems, PET and MRI fusion, and Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Her academic interests include development of clinical trials for breast cancer and lymphoma patients. In particular, she has an active interest in novel treatment approaches which reduce radiation exposure to the heart. Dr. Thomas is a member of the Breast Committee for NRG Oncology which develops large multi-institutional clinical trials at the national level.
